When I was younger, my bed room was covered in posters. As styles and fads came and gone, there was one poster that always remained up on the wall. It was the lamborghini countach. The style and pure raw sport car looks was an amazing site to behold.
The 5.2l V10 engine would send shivers down anyones spine, permanently etched into your mind. When you see and hear these cars in the flesh, you will never forget it.
As my passion for the Lamborghini brand grew, more models came out with the advancement of technology they became smarter, better and faster. Que the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. At the time of writing, Lamborghini has announced the new 2013 shape which will hit the road soon, but this 2011 model is the best personally feel in terms of power and style.
Pulling into Las Vegas speedway, I overheard the F-18 fighter jets buzz over me from the nearby military airfield. As I watched them fly over head, my eyes followed down to the horizon, I noticed of into the distance, little tiny red, orange, green and black blobs dancing in the haze of the desert heat.
Today I was going to be behind the wheel of a Lamborghini. The car brand I have grown up idolising was going to be mine. well, for a little while anyways.
Upon entering the garage, the little colourful blobs showed their faces. A bright red Ferrari F430 and white F458 with black wheels. That F458 looked absolutely gorgeous. Further off into the garage was a Aston Martin Vanquish, Audi R8 (the V8, not the 10) an extremely aggressive Lamborghini Murcielago in Orange and there it was. My perfect car in my favourite colour. The LP560 in Verde Ithaca, or green if your not that obsessed like I am.
Gearing up, I was nervous as all hell, I was about to drive this thing. walking over and meeting one of the owners of the car, he shook my hand – he said his name but thats long gone as I was simply staring at the car, all I remember were the words “ready to have some fun?”
I put the keys in the ignition and twisted. The car was brought to life. So many senses were awake at this moment. You hear and see these cars but behind the wheel for me was completely different. The noise of the exhaust note hummed and the body rumbled as this 5.2L V10 roared into life.
Capable of 412 kW at 8,000 rpm and 540 N·m at 6,500 rpm of torque, The car was inviting me out onto the track. I put my belt on, and at the time not thinking, said to the owner “well, I have never been on a track before on a left hand drive before” there was a slight awkward silence…. then off I went.
Pulling onto the track I babied it for the first lap. Still in awe of the sound, I just listened to the note of the car as I was entering into the corners and pulling back out. Dancing on the throttle at low gears is just pure pornography.
Coming into the next few laps, I really gave it a good hard go. Going down the back straight, it threw you stomach into the back seat and before you know it, your at 230km/h and needing to slow down for the next bend all of a sudden. But thats not what makes this car amazing, capable of speeds of over 300km/h this was just warming up for the babylargo, as its older more powerful brother the Murcielargo passed me in that corner. Its the handling.. Words can not describe how these things corner. I could hear him in my ear piece “faster, go, go, go!!!” Im thinking to myself “is that even possible? Im in this corner at 120km???” Oh, it sure was possible.
As you can probably tell, I am a huge fan of the AWD system and this one put on a show. There is no describing how this thing is capable of cornering with these speeds… I will try though.
Its bullshit good.
How does this crazy voodoo magic do it? Thats whats so great about these cars, they are so capable of surprising you its mental. Hitting the corners it felt like you were breaking the laws of physics.. it just felt that wrong.
As my confidence grew, my laps became quicker and quicker, playing tag with other Lambos, Ferraris and Audi’s in corners on a track is just amazing. It was difficult in the end to pull back into the garage and hand the car back. I just got out and shook my head. there were no words to say. The car was everything I thought it would be plus more.
The thing I was so happy about was the experience of this car on the track. I was not out cutting happy laps down the road on the Las Vegas strip with the windows down and music blaring. Thats what I hate, people using these machines for status icons, or just to have “a nice looking car”. These cars are designed for the track, being driven hard and putting some marks on the bodywork with the breaks glowing red and the exhaust spitting fire into the lost souls you passed behind you. These cars are amazing and they deserve to be treated the life they were built for.
I must admit, it was a very slow drive home in the limo.
